Teddy's War

This is a photo taken from a photo archive and was used to create the cover of Teddy’s War. It shows Omaha Beach, three days after D-Day. It is a typical scene that would be repeated for several months: ships grounded on the sand after the tide went out, unloading men, machines, and materials to feed the Allied forces in Normandy.

This is Omaha Beach in October, 2019. The tide was out and a couple of hundred yards of sand exposed.

On the bluffs above Omaha Beach is the American Military Cemetery. About 10,000 graves that surround a large memorial. A ceremony is held twice a day for raising and lowering the flags that fly over the cemetery.

Taken from the bluffs of the cemetery, this is Omaha Beach to the north.

A photograph taken by my dad in 1944 or 1945. I don’t know where, but I’m sure it was a scene that he saw repeated as he traveled through Normandy, France, Belgium, and Germany.

A photograph taken by my dad in 1944. One of his buddies stands in front of a platoon truck on the outskirts of Bastogne, Belgium. My dad was there on the day that the German offensive began that would later be called the Battle of the Bulge.

A photograph taken by my dad in 1945 while on an excursion after the war was over.  He was on his way across Germany and France to board his troop ship to return back to the States. It is of the island of Mont St. Michel.
