Smoke Dreams
This house drawing came from an old book of house designs in the 1890s. I used this drawing as I wrote about the house.
The gravestones of Charlie Goodnight and his wife, Mary Ann, whom he always called Molly.

A photo of Charlie Goodnight’s house (the two-story building on the left). It’s located in Goodnight, Texas, about 20 miles east of Amarillo, and was the headquarters of his ranch. The house has been restored and a larger building built next to it for a museum and visitor’s center.
Looking northeast from the cemetery in Goodnight, Texas, showing what the country looked like. From this location to the south, the rim of Palo Duro Canyon is a couple of miles away. It was in the Palo Duro Canyon that Charlie first established the famous JA Ranch in the 1870s, which would be the largest ranch in Texas at the time.
